Why Living "Unveiled" Will Change the Way You Grow Spiritually

"Therefore, since we have such a hope, we are very bold" (2 Corinthians 3:12). Have you ever wondered why some people seem to radiate a peace that passes all understanding while others, though they sit in pews for decades, remain stuck in the same cycles of spiritual stagnation? Is it possible that many of us are walking through our lives with a spiritual veil draped over our hearts, obscuring the very glory we were meant to reflect?
I have come to realize that the difference between surviving and thriving in your walk with the Lord often comes down to one thing: the veil. As a community at New Vision Ministries, we are dedicated to the spiritual growth for believers, but that growth is impossible if we are still hiding behind the shadows of the old ways.
The Changing of the Guard: A Historical Ruckus
To understand what the Apostle Paul is saying to the church in Corinth, we must first look back at the historical and cultural landscape of the Intertestamental Period. This was a time of immense tension. The Jewish people were holding tightly to the Torah: the Law of Moses: as their primary identity marker under the weight of Roman occupation. They revered Moses as the supreme mediator, the one who stood on the mountain and spoke with God.
But Paul comes onto the scene to announce a "changing of the guard." He isn’t dismissing the Law; he is explaining that its glory was always meant to be preparatory. In the Roman colony of Corinth, where "glory" was defined by public status, wealth, and rhetorical brilliance, Paul’s message was a total disruption. He was preaching about a glory that wasn't found in a man’s external "ruckus" or social standing, but in the inner transformation of the soul.

The Mystery of the Veiled Face
In 2 Corinthians 3:13, Paul refers to Moses putting a veil over his face so that the Israelites wouldn't see that the glory was fading. First, we must understand the gravity of this: the Old Covenant had real glory! It was written by the finger of God on stone. But it was a "ministry of death" (2 Corinthians 3:7) because it could point out our sin without providing the power to overcome it.
Secondly, Paul makes a staggering jump from history to the present day. He says that even in his time: and I believe in ours as well: when the Old Covenant is read without Christ, "a veil lies over their hearts" (2 Corinthians 3:15). Think about that for a moment. You can be a scholar of the Word, you can know every "thee" and "thou," but if you haven't turned to the Lord, you are missing the point. The text remains opaque.
We often think of the Pharisees as the "bad guys," but they were simply people who missed the forest for the trees. They held to the code but missed the Christ. This is why we focus so heavily on being a biblical teaching church. We don't just want you to know the rules; we want you to see the Ruler.
Listen: Freedom is Found in Turning
At this point, you might be asking, "How do I get this veil off?" The answer is found in the simplicity of the Gospel. "But when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed" (2 Corinthians 3:16).
Listen! This is an urgent address to your spirit. Freedom doesn't come from working harder or following a 12-step program to "betterment." It comes from a total, unreserved turning to Jesus Christ. Paul writes, "Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty" (2 Corinthians 3:17).
This liberty isn't a license to do whatever you want. It is the freedom from the condemnation of the Law and the freedom from the blindness that keeps you from understanding the Body of Christ. When you turn to Him, the lights come on. You no longer have to be a "nobody" trying to prove your worth; you are a child of God standing in the light of His presence.

From Glory to Glory: The Process of Transformation
The climax of this passage is one of the most beautiful promises in all of Scripture: "And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit" (2 Corinthians 3:18).
The great Charles Spurgeon once noted this about our spiritual progression:
"The Christian life is a climb from one height of grace to another; as we gaze more steadfastly on the Savior’s face, the Spirit makes us more like him, and so our glory deepens from stage to stage."
Notice that this transformation is passive. You are being transformed. It is the work of the Holy Spirit. However, the action required on your part is "beholding." You cannot be transformed by what you do not behold. If you spend your week beholding the chaos of the world, the negativity of social media, or the weight of your own failures, that is what you will reflect.
But when we gather for our Sunday worship services in New Bern, we are choosing to behold the glory of the Lord together. We are looking at Christ, and in that gaze, the Spirit of God begins to rework our DNA. This is a progressive sanctification: a step-by-step movement where we become more like Jesus every day.
Why You Need a Training Ground
You were never meant to walk this "unveiled" life alone. The church isn't just a place to hear a sermon; it is a training ground for the Great Commission. St. Augustine once suggested that as the mind is freed from its veil and turns to the Lord, it is progressively changed into His image; the more it loves and sees, the more it becomes what it loves and sees.
To "love and see" effectively, you need a community that holds you accountable and loves you through your struggles. At New Vision Ministries, we emphasize community reconciliation and spiritual training. We don't want you to just attend; we want you to be trained to serve.
Whether you are struggling with doubt or you are ready to take the next step in your leadership, there is a place for you here. Doubt should push you closer to the Word, not further away. Let your questions lead you to our Bible studies, where we dive deep into these theological truths.

Faith Over Feelings: The Final Word
In conclusion, I want to challenge you. Don't rely on your feelings to tell you if you are growing. Feelings are fickle; they change with the wind. Instead, rely on the testimony of the Spirit and the truth of the Word. Are you turning to the Lord daily? Are you beholding His glory through prayer and Scripture?
If you feel like you've been living under a veil: hidden, afraid, or stagnant: today is the day to turn. The freedom you've been searching for isn't found in a better version of your old self. It’s found in the "unveiled" life, where you are transformed into the very image of Christ.
We invite you to experience this transformation with us. Join us for our Sunday worship services in New Bern at 10 AM, or come sharpen your understanding of the Word at our Bible study every Wednesday at 6 PM. Let’s walk from glory to glory together.
